The new Lene Bjerre Shaker Collection chairs have continued the traditions of environmentaly concious style in which chairs and stools are now made from the extremely eco-friendly India rubber tree, also called the gum tree. Most of us have heard of the tall, tropical tree because of its sap, which is drawn off for use in the production of natural rubber. Yet it was only fairly recently that its value as a wood and advantages in the manufacturing process also began to be exploited in sectors such as the furniture industry. This development avoids the pollution created and the huge amount of wood that went to waste in the days when the large rubber plantations were burnt down after around 30 years when the trees could no longer produce sap for natural rubber.
